THE NEW DAY, THE MOUNTAIN, THE SUN, AND THE SHADE
By Jane Mabrysmith

I like sitting on the mountain
Away from all this mess:
The knots, the strings, the ties, the hooks that bind
Everyone into hardened fractures-
Beliefs pieced together in a shape
Unintended:
oblivious awareness
And how do we wake them?
And how do we
Tell them it’s time
For school
When the alarm clock works
But no one
uses it; no one cares
Just an apparatus: a pointless stare...
Like the clock’s tick
Made us all unaware of the world within ourselves
And without
It means nothing to them when the clock ticks ahead
The sonic pitch
Falls dead against the cochlea’s end...
My head pounds as my mind explodes into tiny million fragments.
There’s no more room in the body
For the broken lines
Scattered behind your sleeping eyes
Can be seen now.
It is seen now!
And you don’t know who’s looking
And you don’t know
Who’s been counting
And you don’t know
Who’s been waiting
For this
Time to arrive!
Oh blast from the past
Blast me like the last time you saw me crawling from the crevasse of hell
Do tell me, when was that me?
The echo rings like a vow I made before I could breathe
In the open sea
Tell me!
Was that really me? !
The cross roads is clear, trust me, I know the way
Cause I made it.
Step forward tall, for the mountain is yours
Once and for all!
Welcome to the new day!
And I’ve been here before,
Years ago
When I could say I knew
Everything
About nothing
And nothing
About everything...
But this I know,
This I know:
Nothing about nothing
There is only the heart and the breath,
The new day, and the mountain, the sun, and the shade
Carve me into the cliff where I will always meet the wave
For as still as I might, nature always has the last say.
